Things I Saw on my Walk Today

  • A toddler standing on my front porch, pantless and weeping
  • A green spray-painted smiley face, with eyes that were spaced a little too wide for the mouth
  • Several almond-colored mushrooms
  • A very chubby bulldog sitting on a doormat, who did not like to see me
  • The Field (iykyk), yellow-topped and rain-damaged
  • A man with a star on his chest, walking in my direction and then behind me, who swore very loudly at a car that I assume splashed him with puddle-water
  • A small pile of tiny white plastic straws in the middle of the road
  • A curly-haired young man in black loungewear saying “Stop,” in the most modern tone possible
  • An awful lot of mud on a relatively new street
  • A dark green pickup truck that was more okay with driving over me than with slowing down long enough to let the other car pass me first
  • A giant skeleton with its skull lying between its feet
  • Power lines in rain puddles (my personal favorite of all the things)
  • An open garage door with a starry garland hanging across it and a starry wind chime hanging beside it
  • A plastic water bottle stuck in a chain link fence
  • A gold car containing a lost-faced bald-headed man with white AirPods in his ears. Three times. His face grew in lostness each time I saw him. But his head seemed to remain the same degree of baldness.
  • A great many rain-colored trees

Things I did not see on my walk today, but I might as well have, they assaulted my senses so violently

  • An uncountable number of frogs in the ditchwater beside the road
  • Someone’s laundry detergent/fabric softener/dryer sheets
